29/05/21 Burnham to Brightlingsea

After having travelled down to Laurin for the early May Bank Holiday to check she was all ok and to assess the amount of weed growing on her bottom we decided that a week's holiday on board for half term would be doable after a scrub using our special tool. Speed wouldn't be spectacular but we could have some fun! Having arranged to meet our Freewheeler friends in Brightlingsea for a seafood supper we travelled down Friday evening with picnic snacks in the car but desperately hoping to arrive in time for bar snacks at the Swallowtail. Sadly a road closure in Chelmsford delayed us and despite phoning in advance the Swallowtail would not feed us:-(. A quick stop at the Co-op and it was buttered toast for supper before a relatively early night. Up early to get Laurin in shape for adventure we raided the emergency rations for bacon grill and beans before Mr Tesco arrived with provisions for a few days. As soon as the shopping was stowed we were off.

It was a glorious day but we had wind on the nose and an 8 mile slog against the tide out to the Ray Sand Buoy to cross the sands a couple of hours before high water. We took advantage of the flat motoring to have lunch and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Once we reached the Ray Sand we put the main and mizzen up before motoring across the shallows and then putting the headsail out for the last couple of hours into Brightlingsea. We were a little over canvassed but AJ who is usually cautious when the boat heals decided to head up forward and enjoy the rollercaster ride.... he was still laughing when we hit a wave and he got an impromptu shower!

A great time was had by all and eventually we made it to Brightlingsea to be met by a very excited Freewheeler crew.

A quick change and out for dinner at the Excellent Rosebud Seafood Pub we found last year.

Absolutely awesome once again before a quick swing on the tyre and "home" to bed.
